| Athens Fire Chief Cliff Christopher is retiring, effective Oct. 1.
Christopher, 53, who has been with the Athens Fire Department for 34 years, told Athens Now Wednesday that he wants to spend more time with his wife, Pam, and grandchildren.
Christopher has been the fire chief since 1994. He replaced the late Wilson Craig.

| Former recycling center workers arrested in bogus scheme |

| Athens police have charged two former employees of Athens Recycling Center who are accused of filling out bogus tickets for items and cashing out the tickets for each other.
Steven Wayne Ivey, 39, of 10350 U.S. 72 West, Athens; and Dale Monte Whitehurst, 54, of 1771 Happy Hollow Road, Elkmont; were both charged with second-degree theft of property |
