Clean and Green - Free Dump Day Coming…But Recycle First
Posted On:03/05/2010
Written By: Lynne Hart

On Saturday, March 27th, Limestone County residents are invited to bring up to a truckload of trash to dump free of charge at the Transfer Station located on Hwy. 72 West, just east of 7-Mile Post Road. The Transfer Station will be open from 7:00 a.m. to noon on that day.

RESTRICTIONS FOR FREE DUMP DAY: Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners must have the compressors removed, or be accompanied by a receipt showing that the freon has been professionally removed. No hazardous chemicals or medical waste. Limit of 4 automobile tires accepted per load. You may be asked to show proof of residency, so be prepared to show your driver’s license. NO CONTRACTORS WILL BE PERMITTED TO DUMP FREE.

Before you just pile all your items in a trailer and take them to the Transfer Station, and ultimately to a landfill, please take time to separate out anything recyclable or reusable. Take whatever you can to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center and donate the reusable items to appropriate local charities.

Athens and Limestone County residents, contractors, and residents of other counties are welcome to bring their recyclable items to the Recycling Center. For the two-weeks prior to the Free Dump Day (3/16-19 and 3/23-26) the center will also be paying $.01/lb. for cardboard.

Please bring electronics, appliances, and cardboard for which you wish to be paid during business hours only, which are TUE-FRI 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Cardboard – Will pay $.01/lb during this event

• Electronics - $8 fee for CRT monitors and CRT televisions

• Major household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, freezers, air conditioners, washers and dryers

• Window glass – in or out of frames

• Cooking oil

• Motor oil

• Empty or dry paint cans (dry latex paint is not toxic)

• Auto batteries

• Steel

PLEASE NOTE: These two events take place at different locations. Take all recyclables to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center on Lucas Ferry Rd just south of Hwy. 72. Take all trash to the Transfer Station located on Hwy 72 West just east of 7-Mile Post Rd. Our customers respect this non-profit facility and do not dump.

Call the Recycling Center at 233-8746 if you are unsure if your items are recyclable. Our recycling center is an amazing place. I’d love to tell you more about it, but that’s for another story! The center is here to serve you…now please do your part to live a more earth-friendly life. Do what YOU can.
